Welcome!
Is mental illness a social construction? What types of narratives represent how society, psychology, and individuals see, contest, and experience mental illness and mental wellness? We will grapple with these questions and consider what role geography and identity play in the construction and management of the (un)healthy mind. Readings at UI Bookstore include: Killing Joke (comic book), Winesburg Ohio (short stories), Heart Berries (memoir), Everything Here is Beautiful (novel), Last Night I Sang to the Monster (novel), and Freshwater (novel). Assignments constitute active engagement, a midterm, and a digital story project. Teaching approach: lecture framing, discussions, small group activities, viewing and listening of multimedia, writing and digital storytelling workshops.
